What Is a Spore Syringe?

A spore syringe is simply a syringe filled with a spore solution. Spores are collected from a clean spore print, scraped into sterile water and drawn up into the syringe. When you give it a shake you will often see small dark clumps floating in the liquid, which is perfectly normal and a good sign of a healthy spore load. A single drop placed on a slide with a cover slip is usually plenty for a clear view at 400x to 1000x magnification.

Let the syringe reach room temperature, give it a gentle shake to disperse the spores, wipe the tip with an alcohol wipe and place one drop on a clean glass slide. Add a cover slip and view at 400x or higher.

How should I store a spore syringe?

Keep it upright in the fridge at 2 to 8°C, away from light, and never freeze it. Wipe the tip with alcohol before and after each use to keep the remaining spore solution clean for next time.
