Unicorn Mushroom Grow Bags
Unicorn bags are the industry standard for mushroom cultivation. They are made from heat resistant polypropylene that can go into a pressure cooker or autoclave, and each has a microporous filter patch that lets gases pass while blocking bacteria and mould spores. We stock 3T, 4T, 10T, 14A and XLS-T unicorn bags. The number and letter refer to the filter size and airflow, with tighter filters suited to grain and more open filters suited to substrate and fruiting.
Grow Bags With Injection Ports
Our large and small mushroom grow bags with injection port and 0.2 micron filter are perfect if you want to inoculate with a liquid culture without opening the bag. The self healing port reseals after each injection, which keeps contamination risk very low. If you only need ports, we sell self healing injection ports separately too.
Sac02 Spawn Bags and Containers
Sac02 bags and pots use built in HEPA style filters rather than patches, and they are fully autoclavable. They are a favourite with growers who want reusable, tidy containers for spawn or small fruiting projects. We have used the little 280ml pots for everything from grain jars to tiny lion’s mane fruits on the kitchen shelf.
Choosing the Right Bag
For grain spawn, go for a tighter filter like 14A or 4T. For bulk substrate or fruiting, a more open filter such as 10T or XLS-T helps with gas exchange. If you are not sure, the injection port bags are a great all rounder.
Filling Your Bags
Pair our bags with millet or rye grain and mushroom substrate, seal with an impulse sealer or micropore tape, and sterilise before use.
Unicorn Bags & Containers FAQs
The questions we are asked most about unicorn bags & containers, answered.
What are mushroom grow bags?
Mushroom grow bags are heat resistant polypropylene bags fitted with a microporous filter patch. They can be filled with grain or substrate, sterilised, inoculated and incubated, letting mycelium breathe while keeping contaminants out.
What do the numbers and letters on Unicorn bags mean?
They describe the bag size and filter type. A filters allow slower gas exchange, ideal for grain spawn. T filters allow more airflow, which suits substrate, fruiting blocks and fast colonising species.
Which grow bag is best for grain spawn?
Tighter filters such as 14A or 4T Unicorn bags are ideal for grain spawn. Our small injection port bags are also a popular choice for 1 to 1.5kg grain batches.
Which grow bag is best for fruiting blocks?
For 2 to 3kg blocks, the 3T injection port bag or our large 0.2 micron bags work well. For larger 4.5 to 6.8kg blocks, the XLS-T Unicorn bag gives the most room.
Can I sterilise mushroom grow bags in a pressure cooker?
Yes. Our Unicorn and injection port grow bags are autoclavable polypropylene that handles sterilisation temperatures up to 135°C. Keep the filter patch away from direct contact with water.
What is a self healing injection port?
It is a rubber port that reseals after a needle is pulled out, so you can inoculate a grow bag with a syringe without opening it. That removes one of the biggest contamination risks.
How do I seal a mushroom grow bag?
An impulse heat sealer gives the most reliable seal. Folding the top over and taping it with micropore tape works for small batches.
What are SacO2 bags and pots?
SacO2 containers use built in HEPA style filter strips rather than patches, giving even gas exchange along the bag. The 280ml SacO2 pots are reusable and stackable.
Can I reuse mushroom grow bags?
Filter patch grow bags are designed for single use. Reusing them risks weak seals and contamination. SacO2 pots and monotubs can be cleaned and reused.
Do you sell grow bags in bulk?
Our grow bags are sold in packs of 25, the size most home growers get through in a season. If you need larger quantities for a farm or spawn lab, get in touch for a trade price.
