Which Mushroom Grow Kit Is Right for You?

If you have never grown mushrooms before, start with one of our gourmet mushroom grow kits. They arrive fully colonised, so all you do is cut a slit, mist and wait. Oyster mushrooms in particular are very forgiving, and the first time we watched a cluster of pink oysters double in size overnight we were hooked. For bigger harvests, our mushroom fruiting blocks are larger, denser and give several flushes. If you want to inoculate from scratch with your own culture, the all-in-one mushroom grow bags contain sterilised grain and substrate in one sealed bag, and our monotub kits give you a proper bulk growing setup.

What Mushrooms Can You Grow?

Our mushroom kits cover blue oyster, pink oyster, golden oyster, pearl oyster, elm oyster, king oyster, black pearl king oyster, lion’s mane, shiitake, reishi, pioppino and speckled chestnut. Lion’s mane mushroom grow kits and pink oyster kits are among our best sellers, partly because they look so striking and partly because they taste fantastic fried in butter.

Why Choose Our Mushroom Growing Kits?

Every kit is made with fresh, vigorous cultures and sterilised substrate, so you are not wasting time battling mould. Kits are packed to survive the post and include simple instructions written for real people rather than lab technicians.

Getting the Best Results

Most mushroom grow kits like indirect light, fresh air and plenty of humidity. A humid fruiting tent and a fine mister make a real difference, especially in centrally heated UK homes where the air gets very dry in winter. Keep the kit somewhere between 15 and 24°C, mist two or three times a day and you should be harvesting within a couple of weeks. When the first flush is done, soak the block and go again. If you want to scale up later, our mushroom spawn & substrate range has everything needed.

Questions & answers

Mushroom Grow Kits FAQs

The questions we are asked most about mushroom grow kits, answered.

Which mushroom grow kit is best for beginners?

Our ready to fruit gourmet mushroom grow kits are the easiest place to start. They arrive fully colonised, so you just open a window in the bag, mist it and wait. Blue oyster and pearl oyster grow kits are the most forgiving for first time growers.

Where can I buy a mushroom growing kit in the UK?

You can buy mushroom grow kits online here, with fast, discreet UK delivery. We stock oyster, lion's mane, shiitake, reishi, pioppino and speckled chestnut kits, plus fruiting blocks, all in one grow bags and monotub kits.

How long does a mushroom grow kit take to produce mushrooms?

Most oyster mushroom kits produce their first harvest in around 10 to 14 days. Lion's mane and speckled chestnut usually take two to three weeks, and shiitake and reishi take longer.

How many harvests will I get from a grow kit?

Most kits produce two or three flushes. After each harvest, rest the kit for a week, soak it in cold water for a few hours and it should fruit again.

How much will a mushroom grow kit produce?

A 1.6kg ready to fruit kit can produce up to 700g or more of fresh mushrooms across its flushes. Our 3kg fruiting blocks can produce up to 1kg.

What is the difference between a grow kit and a fruiting block?

Grow kits are 1.6kg and boxed, which makes them ideal for beginners and gifts. Fruiting blocks are larger 3kg blocks of hardwood substrate, giving bigger harvests and better value for regular home growers.

Do I need any extra equipment to grow mushrooms at home?

Every gourmet kit includes an ultra fine mister. In a dry, centrally heated home a humid fruiting tent is a worthwhile extra, as steady humidity gives bigger, healthier mushrooms.

Where is the best place to put a mushroom kit indoors?

Somewhere bright but out of direct sunlight, away from radiators and draughts. A kitchen worktop or bathroom shelf works well. Most oyster mushrooms fruit happily between 12 and 22°C.

Can I give a mushroom grow kit as a gift?

Yes. Gourmet mushroom grow kits are one of our most popular gifts for cooks and gardeners. Lion's mane and pink oyster kits are particular favourites because they look so striking.

What is a monotub mushroom kit?

A monotub kit is a bulk growing setup where grain spawn and substrate colonise and fruit in one ventilated tub. It suits growers ready to move beyond single kits and inoculate their own spawn with a liquid culture.
