Ready to Inoculate Rye Grain
Rye is the grain most experienced growers trust for spawn, and for good reason. The kernels are big, hold moisture well and give the mycelium plenty of food. Our sterilised rye grain spawn bag contains 1.5kg of premium organic rye that has been rinsed, hydrated to the right level and sterilised in a computer controlled steam autoclave for 2.5 hours at 121°C. It is then sealed in a filter patch bag with a self healing injection port, so you can inoculate it straight away without a pressure cooker.
What Is Included
- 1 x 1.5kg sterilised organic rye grain spawn bag
- 1 x sterile alcohol swab
Please note that cultures are not included. You can pick one up from our mushroom liquid cultures range.
How to Use
- Clean the injection port with the alcohol swab and let it dry.
- Shake your liquid culture syringe and inject around 5ml through the port.
- Leave the bag somewhere dark at 20 to 25°C.
- When the grain is about 30 percent white, gently break up and mix the bag to spread the mycelium.
- In 3 to 4 weeks it should be fully colonised and ready to spawn into bulk substrate or fruit directly.
Rye or Millet?
Rye is chunky, forgiving and less prone to clumping. Millet has many more grains per kilo, so it colonises faster. Plenty of growers keep both on the shelf. If you want to compare, try our sterilised millet grain spawn bag.
A Note on Cleanliness
Most failed grain bags come down to dirty technique rather than the grain. Wear gloves, wipe down your surface and use a fresh needle each time. Our sterilisation & hygiene range has all you need.
Storage
Store unopened bags somewhere cool and use within a few weeks for best results. For trade quantities, see bulk sterilised rye grain spawn.
