Turkey Tail Culture
Turkey tail (Trametes versicolor) is one of the most common bracket fungi in British woodland, forming thin, fan shaped shelves banded in browns, greys, blues and creams, just like a turkey’s tail feathers. This turkey tail liquid culture syringe holds 10ml of live mycelium in sterile malt and yeast broth.
What Is Included
- 1 x 10ml liquid culture syringe, sterile sealed
- 1 x sterile 16G needle
- 1 x 70% IPA alcohol swab
How to Use
- Let the syringe reach room temperature, then shake it hard for 10 seconds to break up the mycelium.
- Fit the needle and wipe the injection port of your bag with the alcohol swab.
- Inject about 5ml per bag. One syringe will inoculate two bags of sterilised grain spawn or two all-in-one grow bags.
- Keep the bags dark and warm while the turkey tail mycelium colonises, usually 2 to 4 weeks.
Growing Conditions
Colonise at 20 to 26°C. Turkey tail grows best on hardwood, either sterilised sawdust in bags or freshly cut logs and stumps outdoors. It fruits at 15 to 24°C with high humidity and plenty of fresh air.
Uses
Turkey tail is not eaten as it is tough and leathery, but it is traditionally dried and simmered into tea. It is also a popular species with people interested in functional mushrooms.
A Garden Favourite
Turkey tail is a brilliant species for inoculating old hardwood stumps. We added some to a tired beech stump and a couple of years later it was covered in colourful brackets.
Storage
Keep in the fridge at 2 to 8°C for up to a few months.
